SIM 8: Stay and Make Change  

We agree, 

We believe it's best to work and try to change a system rather than just leave it.  This could be one of the most courageous things you can do in your leadership time.  Shattering the status quo is never easy, but it is worth it.  

Both Dave and I have needed to make the difficult decision to replace key leaders because they don't align to the school's mission.  In the short term, this is painful and difficult.  In the long term, it helps to bring about the change needed to make the school a more student centered learning community. 

 

Here are some ways that we have found success in making these difficult decisions:

 

  • Clear Expectations - Set clear expectations of what you are looking for in a leader

  • Honest Conversations - It's hard, but having honest conversations with leaders that aren't reflecting the mindset that you are looking for can go a long way in changing the culture of the school. 
     

  • Expect Excellence - Why do so many principals settle for mediocrity with teacher leaders?  We challenge you to consider having the courage to expect excellence from everyone, including your self.
